Irish Water say tests at treatment plants confirm water is safe

INVESTIGATIONS continue with Irish Water aware of recent complaints from customers in parts of the county.
Irish Water say daily tests at treatment plants confirm the water is safe.
Christopher O’Dwyer, Labour Party area rep for Palmerstown-Fonthill, first became aware of the issue at home when he noticed a “bit of scum” on his cup of tea.
After speaking to residents in Palmerstown Woods and estates in the North Clondalkin, reports of a foul smell taste from their water emerged, with some reporting sick tummies.
This is similar to complaints made recently across a number of South Dublin County communities (The Echo Aug 20 – investigation into water supply).
O’Dwyer contacted Irish Water, received no response and “escalated the issue” to his colleague Cllr Joanna Tuffy.
“The response does not answer the concerns of residents in the area, some of whom are reporting stomach bugs and general sickness after consuming the water, others are reporting an increase of grit in their appliances,” said O’Dwyer.
“This is simply not on and Irish Water need to address the concerns of residents and take steps to make sure that the water supply is actually safe for residents to drink. Residents need clarity from Irish Water.”
On Tuesday, Irish Water confirmed to The Echo that drinking water microbiological and chemical analysis carried out at water treatment plants serving Dublin is compliant with drinking water regulation and safe to drink.
“In general terms, a change in the taste or smell of drinking water can indicate a change in the treatment process or can be due to the impact of weather on a water source or the presence of organic matter or minerals that have been picked up as the water flows through the system, none of which poses a risk to drinking water quality,” said a spokesperson.
