Local youngsters star for Ireland
THE Ireland men’s U15 side have returned from Azerbaijan where they were competing in the inaugural FIFA World Cup at this age bracket.
The tournament takes on a different format compared to others at older age groups with games being split into two 20 minute halves with games taking an eight a side limit.
The tournament was also designed that all countries would play the amount of games with wins and losses affecting the rounds and tiers that matches were played in.
Overall Ireland finished in 21st position with a record of seven wins, two defeats and one draw.
There was also a number of local players included in the team with Shamrock Rovers and St Patricks Athletic featuring prominently. These include Davin Quinn (Shamrock Rovers), Tom Casey (Shamrock Rovers), Joe Manicle (Shamrock Rovers), Harry Rehill
(Shamrock Rovers), Fionn McCormack Crowe (Shamrock Rovers), Robert Morgan (St Patrick’s Athletic) and Conor Hudson (St Patrick’s Athletic).
FAI International Coach Graham Gartland commented on the performance of the side following their arrival home.
“The performances of all 14 players throughout this tournament have been outstanding, but so too have been their attitude and approach to every aspect of the experience. They deserve huge credit for that.”
“The opportunity to represent their country is something the players fully embraced. It was clear in the lead up to the tournament and throughout that they each take great pride in being Irish.
‘The togetherness they showed as a group was evident in everything they did, both on and off the pitch.”
“This experience will stand to each of the players and give them something to build on as they continue along the player pathway.
‘The future is certainly bright for this group of players but also for Irish football.”
