A LORRY DRIVER who hauling a load 15,000 kgs over the safe limit for his truck on the M50 got a strike out in Blanchardstown District Court when he paid €500 to charity.

Sean Morris was initially charged with dangerous driving but this was reduced to careless driving on a guilty plea after Judge David McHugh heard a summary of the facts.

Morris, aged 62, with an address at Slade Castle Avenue, Saggart, pleaded guilty to careless driving at the M50, Clondalkin, on April 24, 2018.

Sergeant Maria Callaghan said that at 8.50am on the above date, Garda Shane Bonner had been travelling on the M50 at Clondalkin and he saw that an articulated truck and trailer was overloaded.

She said the truck was stopped and it was later brought to a weighbridge.

The truck and trailers maximum load was 44,000 kilos and the truck was carrying a load of 59,600 kilos, 15,000 kilos over its limit.

Sgt Callaghan said Morris had no previous convictions.

Morris’ solicitor said his client had been driving for a long time and was employed by a haulage company. He said that on the day of the incident, Morris had gone in for breakfast while the truck was being loaded and it had been over loaded by mistake.

The Solicitor said his clients employer was in court.

Judge McHugh said he would strike out the case if Morris paid €500 to the Blanchardstown Hospice.

The case was later struck out when the monies were paid over.
