Councillor Charlie O’Connor tabled a question asking the Council on its strategy in dealing with dog fouling and how many fines were issued in 2017.

The Council said that they issued one fine in 2017 for dog fouling.

They added: “The difficulty with enforcement of this particular section of the Act is the requirement for witness testimony, to report that the offence happened and that an identified person is the person in charge of the dog.

“The Council continues to encourage residents groups and/or individuals to assist the Warden Service in this regard.”

The Council added that in efforts to combat the problem they have embarked on a “high level” Dog foul campaign.

It comprises dog litter signage and during 2017 over 2010 dog litter signs were erected in the county. A media campaign was also undertaken including cinema and radio adverts.

Dog litter stickers are also being piloted on existing litter bins demonstrating that these bins are suitable for such litter.
