McGarry edges Coyne in title clash

IN THE all-Tallaght battle for the Irish Modified Rallycross Championship title in Mondello Park on Sunday, Peter McGarry edged it by just a solitary point against Michael Coyne.

Both drivers had qualified for the final with Coyne coming home just ahead of McGarry, but it was not enough to see him overtake his neighbouring rival.

“It was a great battle and that’s what we wanted at the end of the day,” said Coyne

“Neither of us wanted the other to have to drop out early with mechanical trouble and the title being handed to them.

“We came through our three races and made the final. I finished just ahead of Peter, but it was not enough to win the title.

“In fairness to Peter, he drove very well throughout the season and I’m kind of glad he won it because the car he was driving was an unfinished project of mine that I sold to him before I went away to Australia,” he explained.

Coyne did have more to celebrate at this outing as he qualified for the Super Final and finished in third place in his Vauxhall Nova – the highest placed of the two-wheel drive cars in the race.
