Morton Games and National medals for Donore athletes

DONORE Harriers had plenty to celebrate in both this season’s Morton Games and National Juvenile Track and Field Championships.

Jack Raftery was the star for the club in the former, capturing the 400m title after a late surge from the final bend that saw him prevail from among a leading group of five athletes, taking the race in a time of 47.04.

His performance on a wet track saw him fend off the challenge of Clonliffe’s Marcus Lawlor who finished runner-up and Belgium’s Maarten Heylen in third.

Earlier in the week Raftery had his selection for the World Athletics Championships’ Mixed 4x400m Relay confirmed by Athletics Ireland with the Donore athlete heading out to Eugene, USA for the competition that will take place from July 15-24.

Zak Higgins answered a late call to compete in the same 400m race in the Morton Games and, while he figured among the leaders throughout the opening 250m, he eventually finished seventh.

At the National Juvenile T& F Championships in Tullamore on Sunday, Donore’s Emily Bolton set a new club record when winning the Under 15 Girls 800m final in 2.13.93.

She sat just off the front throughout the opening 600m metres before hitting the accelerator to finish comfortably ahead off Letterkenny’s Emma Bonar in second and third place, Emer McKee of Willowfield Harriers.

After a great battle with Hazel Fahy of Loughrea AC for the gold medal in the Under 14 Girls High Jump, Zion Osawe secured the top prize when she equalled her personal best effort with a clearance of 1.53m.
