MORE than 50 members of a New Jersey drum and pipe band marked St Patrick’s Day in Tallaght, and also played at a special Mass in Knock to remember the Dublin-born police trooper, Sean Cullen, who tragically lost his life in New Jersey last week.

The Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums is a New Jersey police, fire and military band, and is made up of active and retired police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and former US military members.

Despite not being able to feature in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, due to the huge demand in the Centenary year, 12 members of the drum and pipe band, accompanied by their family and friends, decided to travel to Ireland – and take in the sights of the capital while playing a few smaller gigs both in Tallaght and the city centre.

Arriving on Monday, the group, which will stay in the Glashaus Hotel, Tallaght, until this Friday, March 18, is being guided around by Homelawns’ resident Kenneth Nolan – who is a friend of some of the band members.

As part of their visit, the band will also play at a special Mass in Knock to remember the Dublin-born New Jersey police trooper who tragically lost his life while attending a car crash on the busy Interstate motorway that connects Washington DC and New York City.

Sean Cullen (31), who moved from Crumlin to the States with his parents when he was just three years old, was hit by a car while attending the scene of a crash on March 7 and passed away from serious head injuries – leaving behind his fiancée and their nine-month old son.

Jason Flood, a New Jersey police sergeant and pipe major with Camden County, told The Echo: “We will be playing at a Mass to remember Sean Cullen, whose family are originally from Dublin but they emigrated to the States in 1985.

“We will stay in Tallaght until this Friday and might do another few performances locally, we played in Molloys on Monday night and it turned into a bit of a sing-song.”
