Acclaimed Ballyfermot photography club Satsun is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with an event in the Mansion House on Thursday December 21, reports Ken Doyle.

Satsun was formed in 2003 when a ten-week weekend photography class ran in the Civic Centre in Ballyfermot.

The class was run by professional photographer Tim Durham and was divided into two groups, the Saturday group and the Sunday group.

When the course ended, both groups came together to form what was originally called Ballyfermot Photography Club. Three years ago, the members changed the name to Satsun, taking the name from the days on which they studied.

Since then, the club has gone from strength to strength, boasting a strong, dedicated membership of around 25 photographers of all standards and ages.

Carmel Grahame, Secretary of Satsun told The Echo: “The club has gone from strength to strength and over the years has hosted the Irish Photographic Federation’s National Shield Competition three times. We also do a lot of voluntary projects with Dublin City Council covering events in the area.”

The group celebrates 20 years

“We like to think we’ve become a useful community resource over the years and we’re always looking for new members. Anyone who’s interested in taking up photography should check out our Facebook page.”

The Mansion House event itself runs from 6pm to 9pm next

Thursday – Carmel anticipates a good turnout from members old and new.

Also in attendance will be Tim Durham, the man who first planted the seed for budding Ballyfermot photographers twenty years ago.

The event will be followed up by a grand exhibition in February 2024 in Ballyfermot library which will showcase the best of the work that this talented group has produced over the course of its twenty years.
