Report says only 27 per cent believe Council is transparent
By Brendan Grehan
ONLY 27 per cent of residents believe South Dublin County Council is open and transparent.
This was one of the stand-out figures in the the Local Authority Satisfaction Report 2018 by the National Oversight and Audit Commission (NOAC). SDCC was one of the ten local authority areas surveyed for the report.
The survey also found that just 18 per cent of residents surveyed in South Dublin are satisfied with the availability of affordable housing. In relation to roads maintenance, the satisfaction level for the county was 55 per cent.
The figure was better for playgrounds/parks at 67 per cent. Road safety was 62 per cent and local amenities/leisure was lower at 53 per cent.
Local TD Eoin Ó Broin has welcomed the publication of the report.
Deputy Ó Broin said: “The report provides valuable insight into the operation of South Dublin County Council. It is positive that 61 per cent of those who responded to the survey are satisfied with South Dublin County Council.
“This is the second highest of the ten local authority areas surveyed for the report.”
He added: “In relation to the services directly provided by the local authority, 67 per cent and 62 per cent of those surveyed are satisfied with the provision of Playgrounds/Park and with Local Amenities/Leisure.”
He said he was concerned that just 18 per cent of residents surveyed in South Dublin are satisfied with the affordability of housing in the area.
He added: “This is line with respondents in Fingal and Dún Laoghaire which is at 19 per cent and 17 per cent respectively. This again highlights how the lack of affordable housing is impacting on local communities.”
He described it as “worrying” that only 27 per cent believe that SDCC is open and transparent.
Deputy Ó Broin said: “This is a timely report from NOAC. It is important to acknowledge all the good work local councils do on a daily basis.”
