ROUND Towers U-10 girls football team will play in Croke Park at halftime during the All-Ireland Ladies Football final on September 25.

The team created a historical video with a 1916 theme, fending off hundreds of entries in a GAA competition to make the final, which will see Dublin play Cork.

Sinn Fein Councillor Mark Ward, a mentor of the team, is “thrilled.”

Cllr Ward said: “Last year’s final had an attendance of over 30,000, so it will be a unique experience and opportunity for the girls to show off their GAA skills. It’s a fantastic opportunity to promote the club and highlight the hard work and dedication that’s put in at grassroots level.

“This team was started by Ken Byrne and his wife Michelle in 2014. They now proudly boast over 30 players and are becoming really good players.”

The video submitted to the GAA linked strong women of 1916 to the strong girls of Round Towers in 2016.

“In making the video, the girls can be seen playing football outside Kilmainham Gaol, The GPO, Croke Park and alongMoore Street,” said Cllr Ward.

“They can also be seen paying homage to the women of 1916 at the memorial garden in Newlands Cross in Clondalkin.

The video ends in the most appropriate place which is the iconic Round Tower in Clondalkin Village. Maria Shannon expertly edited the video.”
