Rovers building for new season

ONLY two weeks after lifting the Airtricity League title, Shamrock Rovers have signed Josh Honohan and keeper Lee Steacy.

At 22, and capable of playing in a number of positions, Josh will join up with the squad in December as we embark on pre season for another big year ahead.

Speaking to shamrockrovers.ie about this signing and what attributes Josh will bring to the first team squad, head coach Stephen Bradley said: “We’ve watched Josh for some time and we’ve really liked him, monitored him for a number of months and we started conversations a while back.

“Josh is one who fits our profile of what we’re looking for, we think he has a really high ceiling and we feel that we can help him reach that.

“He’s got really good attributes, we feel he can only improve by coming to Rovers.

“So we’ll help him and he’ll help us.”

“Josh can play anywhere, he’s a sort of Liam Scales type player in that he can play wing back or centre back.

“He just plays the game, he can use both feet naturally which helps as well.

“So, he’s very comfortable playing as wing back or centre back.

“We’ll mould him into what we see as his best position as time goes.

“But as I say, Josh is one we’ve liked for quite some time.”

Meanwhile, Lee is an experienced goalkeeper, most recently with Cobh Ramblers where he had an impressive 2023 season.

Speaking to shamrockovers.ie about signing Lee, head coach Stephen Bradley said: “He had a really good season at Cobh.

“We spoke to Lee last year, we know him quite well.

“He’s really close with some of the group here, so we’ve been in contact for some time.

“I think that he’s the perfect fit for what we need and what we are looking for.

“It’s really important that he’s here to push Leon and also to help him.

“He has experience in the league, has played a lot of games in the league, so I think he’s a good fit for Leon and will help Leon on and off the pitch.

“With his age (30), when you see how long Alan Mannus played, I think that a goalkeeper is a different animal to outfield players.

“When we look at Leon, he’s a really young goalkeeper so I think it’s important to have a bit of experience around him, and Lee is someone who has been around the league and knows the highs and lows of it, so it’s a good fit for us all.”
