Rovers roll out the red carpet for politicians

By Brendan Grehan

THE MARKETING department in Shamrock Rovers obviously had their Weetabix on Wednesday as they took up the zeitgeist and have invited all sitting senators, TDs, MEPs, councillors and President Michael D Higgins to this Friday’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division fixture with Galway United.

Last week Fine Gael Senator Michelle Mulherin made the news after her public struggles to get a ticket for the All-Ireland senior football final at Croke Park.

Senator Mulherin claimed the GAA was discriminating against members of the Seanad by not guaranteeing their admission for the climax of the Gaelic football season.

Senator Catherine Noone, another Mayo woman, also made the headlines when she too complained that she couldn’t get a ticket from the GAA for the final.

Never slow to miss a trick, Shamrock Rovers are offering tickets for this Friday’s game to basically all our elected public representatives in the state.

A statement from Rovers reads: “Following some ticket difficulties experienced by Senators last weekend for a match in Croke Park, Shamrock Rovers are offering two free tickets for all sitting senators this weekend in a special invitation, which will also include TDs and we will go so far as to include our MEPs and councillors,” reads a statement from the Hoops.

“There is always a welcome on the mat for our President, Michael D Higgins and it is his team (Galway United) that we play this Friday night at Tallaght Stadium.”

There is a good chance Galway and LoI fan President Higgins will turn up, but we are not sure about the rest turning up.
