Safety measures put in place to discourage swimming in Dodder

SAFETY measures are to be put in place to discourage people from swimming in the Dodder throughout the summer months.

South Dublin County Council said that it is expected that the health and safety advisor will be recommending the use of signage and the installation of ring buoys at locations where it may be easy to access the river and where the swimming usually takes place.

They also said that Water Safety Ireland were consulted on the matter and these measures are keeping with their recommendations.

Following the traffic death of Ghaffar Ganiyu,  a 13-year-old boy who got into difficulty swimming in the Dodder underneath the Fort Bridge on Bohernabreena Road last year on August 9, 2020, the access to the council land beside the bridge has been closed off by a security gate and fencing.

Fort Bridge is known locally as Callaghan’s Bridge and the water beneath it has been deemed by South Dublin Council as unsafe to swim in.

The access along the path underneath the bridge has also been closed off by installing fencing along the pathway to prevent any swimming.

The arrangements of a ring buoy and signage along the main road near Callaghan’s Bridge are currently being made and similar measures will be put in place in locations which are commonly used for swimming in the summer such as the Firhouse Weir.
