Schools to participate in Young Scientist Exhibition

A HOST of local school students are taking part in this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition which kicks off in the RDS today, Thursday, January 12.

Now in its 59th year, the exhibition gives students the opportunity to showcase their own scientific experiments and studies, after being shortlisted to take part in the event.

Three exhibitions will be showcased by students from Coláiste Pádraig CBS in Lucan, with one exploring apophenia and pareidolia in machine learning.

The two other projects are an analytical algorithm to predict house prices using machine learning, and a website that can improve the attention span of students with ADHD.

Two groups of students from Kishoge Community College will also be presenting at the event, with projects including a smart bookmark for the mobility impaired and a smart guiding stick for the visually impaired.

Students from Terenure College will also have a stand at the exhibition detailing their investigation into the effect of TikTok usage on teenagers’ attention spans.

A pupil from Our Lady’s College, Templeogue, will present their investigation into the use of herbal plant extracts against antibiotic resistant bacteria in skin infections.

There will also be a strong showing from Tallaght schools, with pupils from Old Bawn Community School and Tallaght Community School exhibiting at the event.

The project from OBCS looks at cellular intelligence by ordering a ‘living plate’ with a slime mould that can navigate food sources in the most efficient way possible.

The TCS students will present an investigation into why the spending habits of senior students and teachers changed during Covid-19, and the factors that affected them.

Students from Adamstown Community College will also be presenting their own study at the exhibition, as will students from St Kilian’s Senior National School in Tallaght.

The study from Adamstown Community College looks at AI energy, using the creation of an air-aluminium cell capable to power relative small devices or larger ones by combining the cells into a battery.

The primary school pupils from St Kilian’s SNS will be presenting their project titled ‘Reduce, Reuse, Restyle!’ at the exhibition.

The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2023 will be held this Thursday and Friday, January 12 and 13, with the winner of the exhibition being announced on Friday.
