CRUMLIN’S JAMIE Kavanagh made a stirring return to the National Stadium on Saturday in the “Second Coming” night. The MGM lightweight faced the pride of Hungary Oszkar Fiko in a torrid eight-round bout. He was made to work for his win against an aggressive and technical opponent.

The fifth round opened up a battle royal with both fighters landing big shots in a messy round. In the sixth round, Kavanagh reverted to basics and frustrated Fiko. The seventh round had Fiko docked another point for holding

The Hungarian was docked a total of two points during the clash for persistent fouling and Kavanagh finally stopped the fatigued Central European fighter in the penultimate round – sending the large Crumlin crowd in attendance into hysterics of joy.

Clondalkin’s Ian Tims showed drive, gumption and guile on Saturday night in the National Stadium to outwork Michael Sweeney in their long-awaited rematch and win the Celtic Warrior cruiserweight title.

Tims was dropped in the fourth round but recovered quickly and bulldozed his way down the straight to take a deserved and technical points win. Sweeney won the crowd with his heart and valour.

Despite Sweeney’s best efforts, Tims did enough to lift the belt and the bragging rights.

Ballyfermot heavyweight Sean Turner made a mark on Saturday night. He took just over a minute, a cool 70 seconds to knock out Hungarian Gabor Farkas.

Turner downed Farkas three times with huge killer shots in front of a capacity crowd in the National Stadium.

Turner has returned to the ring in slimmed-down condition and it was obvious this has been a bonus for his conditioning and speed. He gave good value and it was another exciting and explosive performance for his expanding legion of fans.
