Secondary school takes part in campaign to end LGBT+ bullying

STUDENTS at Mercy Secondary School are recognising and celebrating the LGBTI+ community by participating in a national campaign to end LGBTI+ bullying.

For 12 years now, the BeLonG To Youth Services campaign, Stand Up Awareness Week, has been a time for schools, youthreach centres and youth services to take a stand against the bullying, harassment, and name-calling that silences many LGBTI+ young people.

As part of Stand Up Awareness Week, the student council along with lead teacher Caroline McCorriston have been carrying out activities and events to create an LGBTI+ friendly environment that protects young people against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.  All proceeds from their rainbow bake sale event will go to BeLongTo.

“Our aim is to provide for a happy, inclusive and diverse environment where students feel a strong sense of belonging and identity,” said Ms McCorriston.
