Serious assaults escalate by 60 per cent in the past year

INCIDENTS of serious assaults in Lucan were up by 60 per cent so far in 2019 on 2018.

Incidents of drug-dealing (possession of drugs for sale or supply) in Lucan were up by 133 per cent in 2019 in comparison to 2018. The statistics were revealed at the meeting of the DMR West Joint Policing Committee.

The Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting is a forum where senior Garda officers, the local authority and community representatives consult, discuss and make recommendations on matters of policing for the area.

The statistics given in the meeting were from January 1, 2019 to November 18, 2019.

There were 26 reported incidents of assault causing harm in Lucan in 2019 as opposed to 15 in 2018.

Burglaries were up by 55 per cent with 215 so far in 2019 with 138 in 2018.

Incidents of criminal damage were up by 31 per cent, with 137 incidents so far in 2019 and 111 in 2018.

There were 17 robberies from a person so far in 2019, 11 in 2018 – an increase of 54 per cent.

Thefts from cars were up by 48 per cent, with 144 so far in 2019, 97 in 2018.

There were 130 reported incidents of thefts from shops, an increase of 41 per cent up, from 92 incidents in 2018.

Thefts of bicycles increased from 37 in 2018 to 47 in 2019, an increase of 27 per cent.

Thefts of vehicles were up by 24 per cent, 87 so far in 2019 as opposed to 70 in 2018.

There were 135 reported public order incidents so far in 2019, an increase of 19 per cent on the 113 in 2018.

In relation to possession of drugs for sale or supply, there were 28 reported incidents so far in 2019, an increase of 133 per cent from the 12 in 2018.

Incidents of possession of drugs for personal use were up by 93 per cent, 114 in 2019 and 59 in 2018.

Possession of offensive weapons were down by 17 per cent, 10 so far in 2019, 12 in 2018.

There was an increase of 165 per cent in domestic disputes, with 101 so far in 2019,  and 38 in 2018.

A Garda spokesman pointed out that these are minor disputes between family members or disputes between parents and adult children.

“Advice is given to both parties in respect of domestic violence orders. A follow-up is done within one month of these incidents being reported and, in general, they have been resolved without the need for further action.”

Breaches of barring orders were up by 30 per cent, three in 2019, none in 2018.

Safety-order breaches were down by 66 per cent, one in 2019, three in 2018.

Breaches of protection orders were down by 25 per cent, six in 2019, eight in 2018.
