Sheldon is looking to build on her World Cup success

KATIE Sheldon is gearing up for another big year of international darts.

The young Tallaght competitor has entered 2019 on the back of a very impressive World Cup campaign with the Ireland team that also included Keane Barry (Meath), Killian Heffernan (Kildare) and Sean Cummins (Wicklow).

Representing their country on the world stage for the first time in Bristol last month, the quartet made it all the way to the final where they were eventually undone by a strong Netherlands side.

Prior to that they topped their group with victories over Gibraltar, Wales, Spain, Netherlands and Iceland before beating Scotland in the semi finals.

Bolstered by that strong run on the world stage, Sheldon will soon be turning her attention to the Dutch Open next month, hoping to better last year’s fine performance in this competition when she reached the semi finals of the Girls Under 18 division.

Following that will be the German Open in April, a competition she won in 2018, and another big performance there will set her up nicely for the Europe Cup in Turkey which she will attend in July.

On the domestic front, Sheldon, who also made the last 32 of the World Championship qualifiers, will be representing Dublin in the Leinster Youths and Ladies Championship in Wicklow this weekend.

The Men’s and Ladies All-Irelands will then take centre stage from February 22-24 ahead of the All-Ireland Youths from March 8-10, both of which will take place in Ennis.
