Sleep-out will highlight the plight of homeless

PEOPLE living in emergency accommodation are planning a tent sleep-out in Clondalkin, to highlight the housing crisis.

The event is due to begin on September 1 and is organised by Clondalkin and Lucan Homeless Hub, set up by Councillor Ruth Nolan and homeless activist Dave Moore.

Tallaght man Tony Kelly, from United Survivors, who recently joined the group, said: “I have been assisting them at the stall which they operate four to five days a week in Clondalkin village, feeding the homeless.

"Over the past six months we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of men and women with children using our services, listening to many sad stories.

“Dave and Ruth also deliver food to families who are in need in houses in the area, and to those who are homeless and begging outside shops and garages around the Clondalkin areas.”

Clondalkin and Lucan Homeless Hub organised a rally on July 6 to the offices of South Dublin County Council in Clondalkin.

“This sleeping in tents will continue until South Dublin County Council and the government sit up and take notice and provide proper homes for families,” said Kelly.

“Councillor Nolan and Dave Moore have organised a demonstration whereby all of the men and women and their children who are in B & B and hotel accommodation, will sleep in tents on the streets of Clondalkin.

“One place where they will be sleeping will be in the fields at Bawnogue near the New Nangor Road. The confirmed date for the start is September 1.”

Kelly said he is in talks with members of the Defence Forces from Clondalkin, regarding the supply of tents.
