St Dominic’s girls show how it’s done on the rugby pitch

UNTIL now, there was no established rugby tradition in Ballyfermot, but not anymore, thanks to the perseverance of a girls team from St Dominic’s College.

The school’s junior team were the only Dublin side to take part in the Leinster Rugby Junior Cup blitz in Donnybrook on March 22.

Coached by their Irish teacher Ciara Daly, the girls started the tournament with an impressive win against St David's of Wicklow, running in seven tries.

Next up was Tullow who were too strong for the Ballyfermot girls, and went on to lift the cup later that day having beaten every school in the competition.

St Dominic’s marginally lost by a try to the 2017 and 2016 winners Sacred Heart of Tullamore, and then lost in the final minute to St Marys of Edenderry.

“Despite not lifting the cup that day the girls’ progress on the pitch from last year was evident  – scoring 18 tries in the blitz and showing great team spirit,” said Ms Daly.

Incredible development

Jennie Bagnall, Leinster Womens Rugby Development Officer said was “delighted to see the incredible development” of the St Dominic’s team.

“These girls have absolutely no sporting background, and yet never shy away from the opportunity to play rugby, no matter how experienced the opposition are.

“The dedication of their coach Ciara Daly has led them to have many valuable opportunities to meet other teams and make new friends from all around the country.

“To come close to a draw with a school like Sacred Heart that boasts several Leinster U18 players, is a major achievement for St Dominic’s.”
