As part of his volunteer role as the divisional manager, he is responsible for the day-to-day running of the volunteer local service, administration and recruitment of new volunteers.

He offers volunteers the opportunity to develop themselves as individuals and encourages them to progress and achieve higher qualifications in cardiac first response, emergency first response and emergency medical technician training.

His role also involves communicating regularly with community and youth groups to ensure first aid is promoted locally in schools, clubs and places of employment.

Michael and a colleague Padraig Allen recently helped organise a CPR initiative for businesses in Ballyfermot, and found a shop willing to allow a defibrillator to be located in the store.

The Volunteer Ireland Awards takes place on December 1.
