The students also created a video in which they shared their sincere thanks and appreciation for the tireless work of their local hospital staff.

The project was part of the students Localise module, which is a volunteering programme in which young people come together to make a difference in their own communities.

Kingswood Community College has participated in the project with Localise over the years, including hosting a coffee morning for a local Active Retirement group, an all-abilities sports day with the service-users of St John of God’s Tallaght and students also created 700 Christmas cards for care-packages which were delivered to vulnerable community members.

Third year teacher at Kingswood Community College, Elish Sheridan, said: “The past year has been extremely stressful for students, hospital workers and many others. Kingswood Community College students are proud to be part of an initiative such as Localise which strengthens a sense of community and inclusivity in these difficult times.

“Although Covid has restricted much of the activities for TY students, the group were determined to complete a project which would show their appreciation for the staff in Tallaght hospital.”

The students created the cards and the video during their online classes when they were still in lockdown. Students Rachel Monaghan Doran, who designed the artwork, and Farrah Cleary presented the thank you cards to the staff at TUH.

Ms Sheridan said that the students were met with a warm welcome by Lisa Dunne, clinical nurse manager, and two colleagues from the ICU department in TUH.

Lisa Dunne said: “We were extremely grateful and appreciative for the cards. It meant a great deal to all the staff from the ICU. Tallaght University Hospital really welcome any communication with schools from our community.”
