Tallaght AC gears up for 5k Road Race as Irvine Byrne strikes gold

TALLAGHT Athletic Club will be running its annual 5k Road Race this Sunday, starting at 10am.

Incorporating the Men’s and Women’s Dublin Novice Championship, this year’s event marks the first time the race has been staged since 2019.

The event is open to runners of all standards and anyone interested in taking part can enter online at www.popupraces.ie. Fee is €18.

On another note, Tallaght AC’s Robert Irvine Byrne struck gold at the National Junior and Under 23 Championships in Tullamore on Sunday.

Having qualified with ease earlier in the day when winning his heat in 51.62, the young Tallaght athlete stepped up a gear in the final with a very controlled run over the opening 300m.

And, heading into the final straight, he took up the lead and repelled the challenge of Callum Baird (Ballymena & Antrim AC) and Andrew Egan (Galway City Harriers AC) to take the title in a new personal best time of 48.52.

Joseph Finnegan Murphy, who recently won the Dublin Senior 200m title, was also in action in the Under 23 200m in which he qualified for the final after finishing second in his heat in 22.19.

He recorded a faster time of 21.87 on his way to sixth place in the final.
