Taoiseach confirms referendum on Eighth Amendment to be held next May or June

A referendum on the Eighth Amendment will take place in May or June of 2018, the Government has confirmed this afternoon.

After much speculation as to when and if the referendum would take place, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said in the Dáil today that an “indicative timeline” had now been established for a standalone referendum on the Eight Amendment of the Constitution.

A total of six referendums were announced today. These include four in 2018 and two in 2019. They are as follows:

May/June 2018

A referendum on the Eighth Amendment

November 2018

Women in the home – A referendum on removing Article 41.2

Blasphemy – A referendum on removing Article 40.6.1

A referendum on allowing directly elected Mayors

June 2019

Giving a Presidential Election vote to Irish citizens abroad

Divorce: Changing the four-year separation to qualify for divorce
