THE Maria Lane Choir, which consists of members of Tallaght Cancer Support Group (TCSG), will be marking their fourth anniversary with a celebratory concert in the Greenhills Community Centre in Walkinstown on Friday, where they will also bid farewell to their conductor Derek Moylan, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.

Kingswood man Derek has been the choir’s conductor since it began in 2015, but his last performance with the choir as a conductor will be at the anniversary concert, as he is moving to Scotland in the coming weeks.

Frances McNulty from TCSG told The Echo: “It was all new to him when he started conducting the choir, in the same way that it was all new to us.

“The choir actually started off as a music therapy class, then Derek joined us and he turned us into a choir to be reckoned with!

“He’s so kind, gentle and patient – he’s a lovely young chap.”

The choir, which is named after Greenhills woman and hairdresser Maria Lane, who passed away in January 2015 after battling cancer, is holding the event in aid of TCSG with tickets costing €5 each, and they are available to purchase from TCSG or at the door on the night of the concert.

Performing in the Greenhills Community Centre also has a particular resonance for the Maria Lane Choir, as Maria used to run a hairdressing business in the centre, and TCSG also had a plaque placed in the grounds of the centre in January 2017 in honour of her.

The Canadh Le Chéile Choir from Greystones Cancer Support and Musically Sound from the Cherrytree in Walkinstown will also be performing.

The doors for the concert will open at 7pm, with the performances beginning at 7.30pm.
