The teenager was accompanied by his mother.

A 19-year-old co-accused has also been before the court charged with the same assault.

Garda Chris O’Callaghan said it will be alleged that the teenager was part of a group of 30 males who were making their way towards the Longitude Festival.

He said it will be alleged that the teenager and three others were involved in an argument with another group of males but they continued to walk down the street.

Garda O’Callaghan said it will be alleged the teenager approached the injured party from behind and punched him, knocking him to the ground and making him unconscious.

He said it will be alleged that the injured party was kicked when he was on the ground but the teenager was not involved in that part of the assault.

The teenager’s counsel, Stephen Montgomery BL, asked Judge Patricia McNamara to dismiss the case on the grounds of delay. He said that as his client is a juvenile there is an onus on the prosecution to proceed with the case as timely as possible.

Mr Montgomery produced a number of cases on the subject. Judge McNamara said the DPP would have to be given the opportunity to reply to Mr Montgomery’s application.

She remanded the teenager on continuing bail for two weeks for a decision on Mr Montgomery’s application.
