The Irish Defence Forces open day takes place this weekend

By Aura McMenamin

The Irish Defence Forces are holding their annual Open Day day in the Phoenix Park this Sunday.

If you’ve ever wondered what a member of the Irish Defence Force does, then you are invited to Farmleigh House this Sunday to get up close to military equipment and ask questions about their missions.

You’ll be able to meet personnel from almost every unit within the Defence Forces.

The day promises some exciting action including a parachute display from the Black Knights, unarmed combat demos, a virtual reality experience, the President’s motorcycle escort and a helicopter display from the Irish Air Corps. There will also be Army brass and pipe band recitals.

The Military Archives, which are the primary source of historical material from Irish revolutionary times, will be on site to offer guidance to anyone interested in researching their family history.

You’ll get a hands-on experience and (safely) explore the numerous vehicles and weaponry on display by the Defence Forces.

The event will commence at 11 am and end at 5pm. Admission is free.
