The reduced opening hours at Bawnogue are ‘purely as a health and safety measure’
AN POST has stated that reduced opening hours at the Bawnogue location is due to construction and that the process to appoint a new postmaster at their Bawnogue is “well underway.”
The post office located in the former Londis at Bawnogue Shopping Centre, set to become Tesco Express, is currently operating on reduced hours as a result of ongoing construction at the premises, operating from 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday.
The change has been made “purely as a health and safety measure”, per a spokesperson of An Post.
The An Post spokesperson stated: “There is no closure in Bawnogue. The post office is open for business as usual albeit with slightly reduced hours, purely as a health and safety measure as there is construction work underway in the premises.
“The contract to run a post office in Bawnogue has been advertised and the process to appoint a new Postmaster is well underway. An Post is working towards a smooth transition of service for customers.”
Councillor Will Carey noted that the news of the new store moving into the heart of the community was viewed positively and stated that he would be “delighted” to see a new postmaster appointed.
However, Cllr Carey criticised a lack of communication by the postal service in recent weeks concerning the future of the site.
He described the need for the post office in the local area and the amount of elderly in Bawnogue.
The local councillor said: “There is a huge need for the post office service in the area, and this has been proven by the level of business occurring here.
“There is a high level of older people in the area which means pensioners and others who rely on the service.”
