Traders pub expected to open again under new management

THE Traders pub in Walkinstown is expected to re-open its doors with new management this week following its closure earlier this month.

The Echo understands that the pub, which is located within the heart of the Greenhills/Walkinstown community and was sold by Louis Fitzgerald earlier this year, will be managed by the same company that currently operates and has revitalised D’Arcy McGee’s pub at the Spawell complex.

Local independent councillor Dermot Looney told The Echo that he had concerns surrounding the closure of the pub, which saw the convenience shop located within the building also close.

Cllr Looney told The Echo: “My biggest concern would be the shop, which also closed. There’s a lot of elderly people living nearby and it was a great shop for them.

“Now, they have to travel to Walkinstown or Perrystown to pick up a few bits. I really hope that it is re-opened.
“The social value of having local shops is important. Local people in the area didn’t have one for a long time after McHughs burnt down and I would hope that this is just a short-term closure.”

There has been no indication of plans for the shop, which was also managed by the Louis Fitzgerald group.

The Traders pub sold for €1 million as part of an Allsop auction last September, after Mr Fitzgerald announced he would sell a number of local establishments within the company’s portfolio.

He told The Echo: “The Traders is a great pub with great staff, but I have decided to sell it on due to the fact that it’s not fitting in with our current portfolio. The pubs in our group are all veering towards food, and that’s something that The Traders doesn’t fit with.”
