Sympathies expressed to family of Ballycullen boy who passed away after being struck by van on Friday

Tributes are this evening being paid to six-year-old Cian Marren from Ballycullen.

The young boy was struck by a van in Shankill on Friday afternoon and was transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital where he died earlier today.

The Marren family are well known in the area, and this evening St Anne’s GAA club extended their sympathies after the tragic news.

In a statement, the club said: “It is with great sadness we learn of tragic passing of one of our young juvenile members Cian Marren following a traffic accident over the weekend. 

“All St Anne’s GAA Club would like to express our deepest sympathy to Liam, Lisa, Àine, Ciara and all the extended Marren family and friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Gardai are continuing their appeal for witnesses and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement from Gardai, a spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a traffic collision in Shankill on Friday the 28th of July 2017.

“At approximately 4.45pm a serious road traffic collision occurred on the Shanganagh Road, Shankill, near the Hazelwood estate.

“A white van, travelling in the direction of Shankill Village was involved in a collision with an 6-year-old boy.

“The driver of the van has been interviewed by Gardai. The injured boy was taken to Temple Street Hospital and is in a serious condition.”

Gardai are asking anyone who was in the area at the time or has any information about the collision to contact them at Shankill Garda Station on (01) 666 5900.
