The gardai searched the jacket and found the cannabis. Ross’ defence lawyer said his client was not “a master criminal”.

Ross, (22), Kilcronan Close, Clondalkin, admitted to having no insurance and simple possession of cannabis at Rowlagh Gardens in Clondalkin on May 20, 2017.

Sergeant Maria Callaghan told Judge David McHugh that on May 20 last, the gardai were on patrol in Rowlagh Gardens and observed Ross driving a blue Opel Vectra.

She said that on seeing the gardai, Ross took off at speed.

Sgt Callaghan said Ross later stopped the car and attempted to get out of the drivers seat before he was caught by the gardai.

She said he was later found in possession of some cannabis.

Sgt Callaghan  said Ross has 57 previous convictions  and is currently serving a sentence.

At Naas District Court on October 12 last, he was jailed for one month for breaching the peace.

Sgt Callaghan said Ross has three previous for no insurance and five for simple possession of drugs.

Ross’s defence counsel said his client’s father was murdered in 2016.

He said Ross “is certainly not a master criminal” and added that when Ross was arrested he asked the gardai for his jacket. The gardai searched his jacket and found the cannabis.

He said Ross had been sitting in the car with a friend and decided to drive it for no reason.

The counsel said Ross describes himself as “an idiot”.

He added: “Those were his exact words”.

Judge McHugh sentenced Ross to two months jail with a eight-year driving ban for having no insurance and fined him €100.
