TWO properties in Ballyfermot and Walkinstown are to be established for an approved housing body to support tenants with mental health difficulties.

Dublin City Council have proposed the disposal of 340 Ballyfermot Road, and 14A to E Walkinstown Green, to HAIL Housing Association.

HAIL currently manage the tenancies of the respective properties.

Founded in 1985 as a nonprofit voluntary organisation, HAIL own and manage over 360 homes in the greater Dublin area and surrounding counties.

In a report to the South Central area meeting last week, the city council said it is required to establish a Housing and Disability Steering Group as part of National Housing Policy.

The task of the group is to implement the National Housing Strategy for People with a Disability (NHSPWD) at local level.

This includes the preparation of strategic plans and to facilitate easier access for people with a disability to a range of appropriate housing needs.

A key component of the strategy, is the transfer of local authority properties, currently managed by an Approved Housing Body (AHB), over to the AHB, in order to provide residents housed in these units with tenancy security.

The property transfers in Ballyfermot and Walkinstown will support tenants who have enduring mental health difficulties – a move away from a more institutional environment to independence with structured support.

DCC proposed the disposal of a three-bed shared independent living house at 340 Ballyfermot Road, and a five-bed shared independent living house at 14A to E Walkinstown Green, to Hail Housing Association.

Following the disposal, the residents will become tenants of HAIL Housing.

On their website, HAIL Housing state their strategic plan outlines increasing the number of homes they operate by up to 10 per cent per annum over the next number of years.
