Tyrrell is set for World Sevens Series qualifiers

HANNAH Tyrrell from Clondalkin is hoping to play her part in Ireland’s bid to make the top tier of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series when they line out in the qualifiers in UCD on August 22/23.

From the 12 teams competing, only two will make the cut for the World Series which will take place in venues all around the world includ-ing Dubai, Sao Paulo, Atlanta and Amsterdam.

 

 

“I think we are one of the higher seeds in these qualifiers and we’ll be aiming to win it” Tyrell told The Echo.

“There will be some tough teams in the likes of South Africa and China but we have a very balanced squad of about 23 players and hopefully we can do well” she added.

Certainly the squad will be bolstered by the fact that they have home advantage as well as having recently qualified for next June’s World Olympic Repechage tournament after finishing runners-up in the European competition in Lisbon last month.

Needing to finish among the top three in order to secure further progress, Ireland went one better by making the final where they were just pipped by Spain.

It means they will be involved in another 12-team qualifier next summer with just one berth available from it for the Olympic Games in Rio soon after.

It makes qualifying for the World Series all the more imperative as it will provide them with the opportunity to face the world’s best sevens teams ahead of the Olympic qualifier next year.

On top of all this Tyrell will be keeping one foot in the Ireland 15s camp in the build-up to next year’s Six Nations campaign.

She made her debut in this competition last year and will be hoping for another successful run although that could all hinge on schedules.
