Weekend cleaning of parks and towns cost €260,000 per year

WEEKEND cleaning and litter bin services in towns, villages and parks costs the council approximately €260,000 per year.
South Dublin County Council continues to examine the ways to respond to increased footfall in public parks across the county due to Covid-19 restrictions.

This footfall has led to a significant increase in litter bin usage.
There are currently 150 litter bins in park locations and approximately 700 street litter bins across the county.
The bins are serviced daily by staff from public realm operational depots and serviced by park maintenance staff.
The servicing of litter bins in parks at the weekends was introduced on bank holiday weekends and then increased in 2020 when Covid-19 first hit.
As well as the weekend servicing, the council’s Public Realm are considering other ways to respond to the increased footfall such as provision of temporary litter bins.
They will also examining the role of the park ranger to alleviate the problem of increased litter on the ground.
