WORK has commenced on the construction of the €3.5 million Fortunestown to Killinarden Cycle Scheme, after being delayed by Covid-19 restrictions.

The N81 Cycle Scheme, which is co-funded by the National Transport Authority and South Dublin County Council, commenced construction back in December 2020 but was delayed due to public health measures.

The project is estimated to be completed by the end of November this year, at a total cost of €3.5 million.

The scheme includes road safety, cycle infrastructure and landscaping improvements for approximately 600 metres along the N81 at the Fortunestown and Killinarden Road Junctions.

It will include road and junction realignments, construction of a new off-road two-way cycle track, construction of footpaths through the open green space and Pedestrian and cyclist safety improvement works.

The project will also see improvements to existing bus stops and footpaths along the route, a replacement of trees and provision of new public lighting, road markings and cycle route signage.

During the construction, there will be traffic management in place on the N81 between the Outer Ring Road and the Fortunestown Road Junctions and the surrounding adjoining roads.

Arrangements will be made for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicular traffic from the works area.

Local access will be maintained for the duration of the works in order to minimise the impact on the residents in surrounding areas, businesses and schools.
