CLOSE to 40 cars were seized by gardai in the Ballyfermot area from October to December – and a significant number of these cases occurred on Halloween night, reports Maurice Garvey.

Members of the public who called gardai in relation to joyriding, were thanked by senior officials at the recent Ballyfermot Policing Meeting.

“We set up a lot of checkpoints over the Halloween period and cars were taken out,” said Superintendent James Dalton, Clondalkin Garda Station.

“A lot of them are what we call company cars, they were rallying them on Halloween night, and a number were seized, thanks to public calls.”

In total, 37 cars were seized by gardai in Ballyfermot from October to December, under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.

According to gardai, drug-testing is now a regular feature in checkpoint operations in Ballyfermot, Chapelizod and Palmerstown.

Meanwhile, 18 drivers were detected to be under the influence of alcohol in checkpoints during the October to December period.

Gardai say the policy now is they will conduct testing on the drivers involved in a collision.
