
Donore Harriers young guns scoop county championship medals
DONORE Harriers continued to make a big impact at the Dublin Juvenile Track and Field Championships at Irishtown Stadium.
On Day Three of the competition, the club’s Girls Under 19 and Under 17 teams scooped silver and bronze respectively in the 4x100m relays.
A strong Under 19 quartet of Robyn O'Keeffe, Andie Maguire, Ciara O'Donnell and Suzi O'Farrell ran a time of 50.4 to finish between winners Clonliffe Harriers and third place DSD.
The Under 17 team, consisting of Robin Sweeney, Jennifer Tread-well, Ellie Raftery and Lucy Kirwan, recorded a time of 54.9 to place third.
In the Under 13 Girls Relay Sophie O’Farrell, Sarah Tavey, Sophie McIntyre and Aoife Sammon combined to place fifth in a time of 55 flat.
The following day, multi-event athlete Lara O’Byrne was the club’s star performer, winning the first of two gold medals in the Under 19 Girls High Jump with a best clearance of 1.61m.
She only marginally missed a personal best jump of 1.64m when her arm touched the bar on the take-off section of her jump.
In the same contest her team-mate Lucy Hurley was runner-up with a personal best jump of 1.58m.
Discus
O’Byrne then won the Discus event with a best throw of 10.03 metres, before placing second in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 15.1 while Hurley came home third in the same race and later added another bronze medal to her tally in the final of the Under 19 Girls 200m.
O’Byrne later won the Under 19 Girls Long Jump and Javelin recording a leap of 5.15m and a throw of 28.03m.
Andie Maguire (4.99m) placed second behind O’Byrne in the Long Jump before bagging her second silver of the day in the Triple Jump.
Ruby Kelly was the surprise winner of the Girls 2km Race-Walking competition, clinching a photo-finish to land her first championship medal.
Donore’s other gold medal winners on the day were Sean Kinsella (1.55m) in the Under 15 Boys High Jump and Robyn O’Keeffe in the Under 19 Girls Discus.
High Jump and Hurdles
There were silver medals for Medivic Bakanababo (1.35m) in the Under 17 Girls High Jump and 100m Hurdles; Ben Iveagh (22.98) in the Under 18 Boys 200m and Suzi O’Farrell in the Under 19 Girls 200m.
Eve Conroy reached the final of the Under 13 Girls 60m Hurdles, finishing fourth, while Medivic Bakanababo, took the same position in the Under 17 Girls Shot Putt.
Sean Kinsella and Sean Kissane took fifth in the Under 15 Boys 200m and Under 16 Boys 200m while Simon Murphy did likewise in the final of the Under 18 Boys 400m.
Suzi O’Farrell won the Under 19 Girls 100m in a time of 13.64, with her team-mate Lucy Hurley picking up silver.
Daragh McAuley (57.73) took gold in the 400m Hurdles event before Matei Ursachi followed suit in the Under 12 Boys Shot Putt with a personal best throw of 7.80m.
Ben Iveagh won silver in the Under 18 Boys 100m while Lucy Kirwan won a brace of bronze medals in the Under 17 Girls 100m and Long Jump, and Medivic Bakanababo (56.50) took the same colour in the Under 17 Girls 300m Hurdles.
