Egan siblings win gold and silver in Descent

BOTH Jenny Egan and her brother Peter Egan scooped medals in The 59th International Liffey Descent on Saturday.

The former won gold again in the Mixed K2 category with her fiancé Jon Simmons while Peter Egan and his K2 partner Danish athlete Mads Brandt Pedersen won silver in the Senior Men's K2 category.

The 30km race, which includes 10 weirs and one portage, started from Straffan in Kildare and finished at the Garda Boat Club in Islandbridge.

And this year’s Descent brought different challenges than normal as the water level was signifi-cantly lower due to the recent drought.

Jenny Egan, who became the first Irish athlete to win a Senior Canoe Sprint World Championship medal three weeks ago in Portugal stated, “It was a very different race to normal.

“It was a long, hard slog and it was very hard to judge your lines on the weirs, but I am delighted to win the Mixed K2 category for the sixth time.”

Jenny, who was contesting her tenth Liffey Descent, has also previously won the Senior Women’s K1 category as well as two gold medals and a silver medal in the Junior K2 division.

Peter Egan and Mads Brandt Pedersen, the winners from 2016, also had a very successful day on the water, winning a silver medal in the Senior Mens K2 category behind British International athletes Nicky Cresser and Tom Lusty.

“We had a good race in tough conditions and a strong line-up and are happy to win silver against so many great International athletes,” said Peter.
