Family of local man murdered in Ballinascorney Woods plead for information

The family of a local man who was murdered in September 2016 in Ballinascorney Woods have pleaded for information in relation to his death.

Environmentalist Michael McCoy was found dead near his home in Brittas on September 30 last year. He had been attacked while out walking his dogs.

In an emotional appearance on RTE’s Crimecall last night, Mr McCoy’s eldest daughter Rachel pleaded with anyone who may have information connected to her father’s death to come forward.

She said: “He’ll never be a granddad and that’s not fair. So if someone knows something just tell….don’t protect someone.”

Mr McCoy’s wife Caitriona also spoke on the RTE show, saying: “In hindsight you’d notice things were a little bit, not quite right… the post hadn’t been brought in and the hens hadn’t been let out. I didn’t think too much of it.”

After a number of hours Mr McCoy’s wife Caitriona and his daughter Suzanne went looking for him, and they soon discovered his car where it would normally be parked when he was walking his dogs.

Suzanne said: “We were worried he might have had an accident or something, maybe that he’d fallen over.”

She continued: “He wasn’t there and my mum was getting more nervous. It was getting a bit dark, then we went home and called the guards.”

After Michael’s disappearance was reported to Gardai a large-scale search got underway, with the help of the Wicklow Mountain Rescue.

A number of rescue teams sprawled out across the Ballinascroney Woods, and in the early hours of the following morning a body was discovered.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CrimeCall on 1800 40 50 60, or Tallaght Garda Station on (01) 666 600.
