
Gardai investigate fire at building site of new library in Tallaght

GARDAI are investigating an incident of suspected criminal damage that occurred at the site of the new library in Tymon North on Sunday evening.
At around 9.30pm last night (July 14), two fire engines from Tallaght Fire Station attended the construction site of the new Castletymon library, which is currently under development.

According to South Dublin County Council, which is building the new library, the fire damaged the contractor’s plant and equipment – with gardai now investigating the matter.
In a statement to The Echo, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that gardai are investigating “an incident of suspected criminal damage by fire” that occurred at a construction site on Castletymon Road, Tallaght.
“A number of vehicles and portable cabins were damaged”, the Garda spokesperson said.
“No injuries were reported.
“No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.”

Speaking with The Echo today, Independent councillor Mick Duff said that the “anger is palpable” in the community.
“People are really and truly angry”, Cllr Duff said.

“People see an attack on a community building like a library as a direct attack on the community.
“I would be appealing if anyone has any information whatsoever to contact Tallaght gardai.”
