Gardai investigating after two elderly women mugged in car
By Hayden Moore
TWO elderly women had to deal with a frightening ordeal when a man opened their car door in a mugging incident in Palmerstown on Monday afternoon, reports Hayden Moore.
The women, in their 70s and 80s, had left the post office in Palmerstown Shopping Centre and made their way down towards Culmore Road in their car where they were subject to the attack.
The incident occurred along Culmore Road in Palmerstown
One of the lady’s handbags was taken, which contained a sum of cash that was withdrawn in the post office – with her sustaining some scratches and bruising as she tried to fend off the thief.
Following the incident, Councillor Alan Hayes told The Echo that it was more than physical injuries that were left behind as a result of the unprovoked attack.
“The lady whose bag was taken has got a few bruises but it’s the type of thing where the physical injuries will heal much quicker than the emotional ones left behind – they were shook after it,” said the Palmerstown-Fonthill councillor.
“We don’t want to create a climate of fear in Palmerstown. This kind of thing happens somewhere else every day, it just so happens that it’s Palmerstown this time – so it’s not just us.
“You have to remember that this is how these people make a living, they come into areas to do their thing and then they move on to the next one.”
Expanding on how the community can help the vulnerable members of the community, Cllr Hayes said: “We should try our best to look out for our neighbours, in particular the more vulnerable ones because Palmerstown is a great community, there is a lot of trust between Palmerstown residents regularly.
“We don’t want the more vulnerable members of the community feeling intimidated or scared to leave their homes, so ask your neighbours to see if they need any help.”
In a statement to The Echo, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are investigating a suspected burglary from a vehicle that occurred at approximately 2pm [on] July, 8 2019 on Culmore Road, Palmerstown.
“A sum of cash and other items were understood to have been taken. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.”
