Half price public transport extended to 24 and 25-year-olds
ALL young adults between the age of 18 and 25 can now avail of half price fares on public transport, after the scheme was extended to include 24 and 25-year-olds.
The extended scheme allows 18 to 25-year-olds travel for half price using their Young Adult Leap Card, with 50 per cent fare discounts applying to Dublin Bus, Irish Rail, Bus Éireann, Luas, Go-Ahead, TFI Local Link and participating bus services.
According to Government, the move makes Ireland ‘one of the best value public transport countries in Europe for young people’.
Speaking following the announcement, local deputy John Lahart (FF) said: “It is fantastic that the extended fare discounts for young adults have now come into effect.
“This is going to make a real difference for young people that rely on public transport in Dublin, whether they are going to work, training, college or just meeting up with friends.
“More and more people are using public transport, so it is vitally important that people who choose to use public transport are supported and that we continue to make it as accessible and affordable as possible.”
These additional discounts come alongside a 20 per cent fare reduction for all who travel by public transport alongside investment in transport developments like BusConnects and the DART extension.
According to Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan: “Fare initiatives such as this extended Young Adult Card, the Student Leap Card, the 90-minute-fare, and the 20 per cent average fare reduction for all adults on PSO services are making a marked difference to people’s travel costs.
“…but also, to our collective ambition to reduce emissions from transport and to help reduce congestion in our cities and towns.”
