ITT Radio Society is again nominated for BICS awards

By Brendan Grehan

FOLLOWING last year’s victory of being named “Best society in a cultural/social/academic field” at the BICS (Board of Irish College Societies) Awards, IT Tallaght’s Radio Society has again been nominated by the college to represent IT Tallaght at this year’s BICS awards, reports Brendan Grehan.

It has been a very busy year for the ITT Radio Society. Throughout the year, they ran two Radio Weeks, including their February Radio Week (Feb 1-5) which has been complimented as the best and most professional Radio Week that IT Tallaght has ever held to date.

In an effort to reinforce their tag line “By the students, For the students”, the society held the ITT Students Union Election Coverage, which included a dedicated page on their website (ittfm.ie) to each candidate, an interview with each candidate which was then uploaded onto their YouTube Channel (ITT Radio Soc), streaming of the candidate’s hustings, and finally, a live broadcast of the Election results as they happened on 99.1 fm.

Emily Phelan the ITT Radio Society’s PRO told The Echo: “This was a huge endeavour which encouraged students of ITT to get involved and vote and was highly praised by the staff, students and SU candidtates of ITT Tallaght.”

The society have also been working hard this year to break the stigma attached to mental health. They recently held an “I TEA TALLAGHT TALKS” event which invited all the students around the college to come together for some tea (and lots of goodies) and chat about mental health and the stigma surrounding it in Ireland.

The Radio Society welcomed Grace Mongey, made famous from her beauty and lifestyle blog “facesbygrace.com”.

With a social media following of over 65,000, she has become a well-known name in Ireland. Having featured in Stellar Magazine and R.S.V.P.–Women of Style she has built a career for herself that has continued to grow over the years.

Grace is a well-known speaker when it comes to mental health, having suffered from anxiety and depression all her life. She has travelled alongside ‘Bressie’ to speak at numerous conventions promoting mental health among teens and the stigma that has surrounded it for so long.

Grace talked to the students about her own experience and how she dealt with it herself. Overall it was a great success and ITT fm plans to hold monthly meetings for the students to promote good mental health in IT Tallaght from now on.

The society has many plans for the rest of the year including a 1916 Rising Broadcast Day and an intervarsity with DCU fm.
