Liam claims Irish Intervarsity Championship
MAYNOOTH University golfer Liam Abom revelled in his first piece of silverware as he claimed the Irish Intervarsity Championship at Laytown & Bettystown.
The 20-year-old who is with Edmondstown Golf Club carded a brilliant -4 round of 67 on Friday to claim the victory by three-shots over Emma Fleming (UCD) in second, who picked up the women’s title.
Meanwhile, Maynooth University also claimed the team event with Abom and Simon Walker combining for a brilliant overall score of -10, ahead of UCD in second.
The Edmondstown man shared the individual lead with his colleague, Eoin Murphy, on -6 overnight, with a three-way tie on -5 in behind.
However as the conditions improved on Friday morning, the scoring got better too. Fleming was first to make a move and she joined the leader after a birdie on the second but Abom caught fire from the fourth hole onwards, a streak that began with an eagle.
He followed up with three birdies by the 11th and he remained composed throughout the back nine to take the title.
Abom had a solid round of 70 on Wednesday but when he added a 66 in Round 2 it really gave him the opportunity to strike, and he took full advantage.
“It feels good, it’s the first time I’ve won a real tournament. It’s really satisfying to do it,” said Abom.
“During the year I had some good rounds but I didn’t really put it together. I just played really solid for the whole week. It is really good to get it done.”
