Local boxers gearing up for Euro Schoolboy/girl contest
NO LESS than six local boxers have been named in the official 32-strong Irish squad that will contest the European Schoolboy/girl Championships in Tbilisi Georgia this month.
Starting this coming Sunday, the competition will involve some 31 nations in this, its 17th year.
Drimnagh BC’s Kai Griffin will be among the locals in action on the European stage.
Drimnagh Boxing Club will boast two members on the travelling panel in Kai Griffin and Georgia Dunne McGovern.
Lining out in the Boys 38.5kg division, the former is coming into this championships on the back of winning his third national title after beating Corinthians’ Paul Fitzgerald in his Junior Cadet Championships decider at the National Stadium.
His clubmate Georgia Dunne McGovern will relish the opportunity to compete on the European stage after having finished runner-up to Natalia Fasciszewska of Aglish BC in the Girls 51kg Final.
Neilstown Boxing Club’s Ryan Collins Murphy will line out in the Boys 72kg division hoping to emulate the achievements of clubmate Winnie Christina McDonagh who won gold in this championship in 2018.
Adam Olaniyan will be hoping to add a European medal to what has been a hugely impressive year for Jobstown Boxing Club when he competes in the Boys 90kg.
The Tallaght club has already landed eight national titles, Olaniyan winning his Junior Cadet 90kg title following his 4-1 victory over Edward Sweeney of Titans BC in what has been the most successful year that Jobstown Boxing Club has had.
Laurence Connors of St Mary’s BC will contest the Boys 56kg while Whitechurch starlet Gabrielle Mongan goes in the Girls lightweight field.
