Motorists advised to exercise caution as Storm Callum approaches

With Storm Callum approaching motorists have been urged to exercise caution on the road tomorrow night after Met Eireann issued a Status Orange wind warning.
Issued today, Met Eireann’s warning is valid from 10pm Thursday night until 9am Friday morning, with winds expected to be strongest overnight on Thursday and gusting between 110 and 130 km/h at coasts.
The strong winds from Storm Callum are also coinciding with high spring tides, which will affect Ireland during the Status Orange wind warning.
The Road Safety Authority has advised motorists never to attempt to drive through flooded roads and to “heed any warnings or detours” that might be in place by the Local Authority or Gardai.
According to a statement released this afternoon: “The RSA is asking road users to check local weather and traffic conditions and be aware of the conditions before setting out on a trip.”
Additional advice by the RSA includes watching out for objects and falling debris being blown onto the road; to allow for extra space for cyclists and motorcyclists; and to drive with dipped headlights at all times.
For any pedestrians or cyclists that venture out during Storm Callum, the RSA recommends that they should wear bright clothing and take extra care on roads “as a sudden gust of wind could blow you into the path of an oncoming vehicle”.
