Nearly 1,700 on the spot fines issued to cyclists
Breaking a red light is the most common offence committed by cyclists, with the latest figures showing nearly 1,700 on-the-spot fines were issued by Gardai.
The new fines system was introduced in the summer of 2015, and since its introduction a total of 1,660 fines have been issued.
On-the-spot fines can be issued to any cyclist who commits any of seven offences, which include no lights, failing to stop for a traffic warden, breaking red lights, and others.
The on-the-spot fine is €40.
