Work started on the €1.6 million skatepark in Ballyfermot

Local sources indicate the security guard received a “beating.”

Work began on the project last week, but The Echo understands “serious threats” have already been made to contract workers on site.

The Dublin City Council skatepark and playground is scheduled to be located on a corner of Le Fanu Park, adjacent to Ballyfermot Leisure Centre.

A spokesperson for DCC said: “Work has commenced in recent days on the construction of the skatepark and playground in Le Fanu Park, Ballyfermot, beside the leisure centre. There have been serious threats to the contract workers and a security guard was assaulted on Saturday evening by a gang of up to 15 young men.

“The matter is being investigated by gardai. Dublin City Council is liaising with the contractor and the gardai to ensure that this important amenity for the youth of Ballyfermot and a wider area is able to progress without threat of violence to people who are employed on the site.”

The project was delayed last year due to the withdrawal of the previously appointed contractor.

The Echo understands DCC recently appointed a new contractor from England for the project.

A garda spokesperson told The Echo: “This is an ongoing investigation. Facts have not yet been fully established, however anti-social behaviour in this area on Saturday night at approximately 8pm are being investigated.”
