The most popular emojis on Twitter have been revealed…with one surprising entry
By Mark Keane
Emojitracker, a project to determine the most and least used emojis on Twitter, has now tracked over 23 billion tweets and revealed that the recycling symbol is one of the popular emojis.
Set up in July 2013 as a small weekend project by Matthew Rothenberg, the project has revealed that the most used emoji is unsurprisingly Face with Tears of Joy, otherwise known as the laughing/crying emoji, while the aerial tramway emoji is one of the least used emojis.
The top 10 most used emojis were a mixture of face and heart emojis, while Input symbol for Latin capital letters was dead last in the list.
The universal recycling symbol is currently the third-most used emoji, and sits in the top five with laughing/crying; heavy red heart; smiling face with heart-shaped eyes; and heart suit.
Discussing whether his project was worth it in the end, Mr Rothenberg concluded: “I know, and have always known, that Emojitracker is a silly project, one with dubious utility and requiring a bit of lunacy to have spent so much time and effort building.
“Still, for all the people who saw it and smiled, and may have had a slightly better day than they would have otherwise — it was worth it.”
