Wooden sculpture destroyed by fire in Lucan playground

A wooden structure was set alight in Griffeen Valley Park in Lucan last night, with South Dublin County Council working closely with gardai to discover the cause of the blaze.
One unit from Tallaght Fire Station attended the scene at around 11pm last night (Sunday), with a wooden structure of a troll on fire in the playground when they arrived.

In a statement to The Echo this afternoon, a Dublin Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “One unit from Tallaght fire station attended. A wooden sculpture [was] on fire in the playground."
When contacted by The Echo, South Dublin County Council said that they are working closely with gardai in relation to the fire.
A council spokesperson said: “[DFB] attended a small localised fire which damaged a wooden sculpture of a troll. There was no damage to play-space equipment.
“The sculpture is being examined to see if it can be restored.”
The spokesperson added: “The council is working closely with An Garda Síochána in relation to the matter.
“CCTV in the locality is being examined.
“As the damage was localised, the park and playground remain open.”

After visiting the playground today, councillor Vicki Casserly said: “Playgrounds are community assets.
“Vile thuggery like this is an attack on not just the amenity but our community spirit.
“This is my local playground where I play with my kids just like so many of my neighbours.
“It’s soul destroying to think that others want to take that away from our children.”
